Skin. That layer of tissue that protects our body against aggressions… but it is also that thin layer of tissue that drives us crazy by behaving uncontrollably. Breakouts, dry patches, disco ball face… You know what I mean!
I used to have an oily acne prone skin… well that what I used to think. I used to have a shiny T zone and breakouts, you know the kind of breakouts that hurt and look like a red alarm on your forehead… I always have been taking care of my skin. This is something my mom taught me. I started by the age of 12. I always picked some purifying products, creams, masks, cleansers. My skin was handled but I kept on having these awful, painful breakouts. Then I decided to HYDRATE it.
After a visit at a Kiehls’ counter in January the girl asked me tons of questions and tested my skin with a strange tool that calculates your skin’s hydration rate. The average hydratation rate is around 50. Mine was 29 on my cheeks and 32 on my forehead. I was shocked. My skin was SERIOUSLY dehydrated. But she said my routine was good. I was (and Still am) cleansing my skin with oil then a Clinique gel, using a toner and Sisley hydra global cream (which is supposed to be a powerful hydrating cream). Something was wrong somewhere. I was hydrating my skin but it was not keeping the hydration inside. Then she explained to me that my shiny T zone was a defence reaction. My skin felt aggressed, and secreted some sebum to protect itself. Same for the breakouts.
I came home with a diagnosis. My skin is dehydrated and ultra sensitive that tends to breakout when it is not happy. I also came home with a new routine. And six months after I have a completely different face. (Well at least skin 😂)
These are the products of my morning routine (I will share with you my night routine soon!!)
On the morning I cleanse my face with the centella skin-calming facial cleanser. This is a very gentle cleanser. You can use it with wet or dry hands on a wet or dry face. It’s not foaming at all so don’t be afraid. On the morning I prefer to use it on a dry face with dry fingers. It dissolves the impurities very gently and leaves the skin soft and plumped and seriously soothed.
It is based on 3 natural ingredients : Centella asiatica, chamomile and aloe vera.
What does the brand say: Tiger Herb (Centella Asiatica): Tiger Herb contains alkaloids and minerals that are beneficial in the treatment of a host of ailments. It has antibacterial, anti-psoriatic, and wound-healing properties. The Tiger Herb plant is sought out by wounded tigers in the wild who rub against it for its healing properties.
Aloe Vera: Derived from the aloe vera plant this ingredient has been known to soften, soothe and comfort skin.
Chamomile is a white and yellow daisy-like flower. Chamomile comes in various forms, including Roman, German and Hungarian flowers. The extract distilled from Chamomile has soothing and comforting properties. Certain flower extracts are used to help bring out highlights in light-colored hair.
I can see a difference since I use this cleanser. It is very soft yet very efficient. I will definitely repurchase.
After the cleansing step, toner time!
I use the Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner which is an effective alcohol free toner for normal to oily skin. This one is based on 3 natural ingredients known to improve and soothe the skin. And it has some calendula petals in it! So cool!!
What does the brand say: Allantoin: Allantoin is a compound that is found in Comfrey Root. The comfrey plant is a hairy perennial Eurasian herb long used in herbal medicine. Known to be a bacteria inhibitor, Allantoin can soothe and reduce inflammation in various product formulations.
Calendula: Calendula is extracted as an oil from the common marigold flower. Its mild properties make it ideal for use on all oily skin types including sensitive skin. Soothes skin and is especially beneficial for delicate skin.
Great Burdock: Great Burdock is a gentle, natural ingredient known for centuries to help improve dry skin.
After the toner step it’s eye cream time. Be careful to use your eye cream BEFORE your face cream as the eye contour skin is very fine and needs special texture. Otherwise the eye cream won’t penetrate. You wouldn’t want your eye cream not to be absorbed by your eye skin!!! My eye contour just needs some hydration so I use a hydratating eye cream. I used to use the Sisley Baume efficace which is a gel texture. I loved the texture but just didn’t find it incredibly efficient. I know the thing with eye cream is that we don’t SEE the results. I did not repurchase this one. Instead I got the Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado. This one is a more rich texture that becomes oil when you massage it. I already repurchased this one three times!
What does the brand say : Avocado Oil, derived from the fruit of a tropical American tree, is a rich, fatty-acid emollient. Avocado Oil is known to be the most moisturizing of any fruit oil. It is also a natural source of Amino Acid proteins, Vitamins A, D, E, and potassium. Helps to restore the natural moisture of the skin. Beta-Carotene is a naturally derived antioxidant predominantly found in many orange/red vegetables such as carrots. It is used in Vitamin A production and gives an orange tint when used in skin care products.Shea Butter is the natural fat obtained from the fruit of the African Karate tree and is widely used in lotions and cleansing products for its hydrating properties. Protects skin from dehydration, restores skin’s suppleness and improves the appearance of dry skin.
Now comes the real change in my routine! THE OIL! The Kiehls Daily reviving concentrate. I would never have thought I’d add oil to my routine as I have an oily T zone. BUT believe it or not, my T zone is WAY LESS shiny since I added these drops in my routine. They’re supposed to keep the hydration INSIDE. So no more defence reaction by secreting sebum. and IT WORKS! It really does!!!
What does the brand say :
- Strengthens skin’s defenses against daily aggressors to keep skin youthful and radiant-looking all day
- Provides antioxidant protection with a powerful blend of naturally-derived oils, including Ginger Root, Sunflower and Tamanu, to help skin feel fresh and look energized morning to night
- Paraben free, 100% natural origin, Mineral oil free, Non-comedogenic, Non-acnegenic
What I like in this one is that it has some ginger root extract. And I know how ginger is a powerful antioxidant and antibacterial agent. I already repurchased this one twice! LOVE it!
FINALLY! THE CREAM!!!
Since January I changed the cream. I used to use the Sisley Hydraglobal cream as I previously said. But I just changed for Decleor Hydra Floral anti-pollution Gel cream. Decleor is a french brand that works with aromatherapy to provide very efficient products. Their products are based on essential oils (like Sisley but much cheaper). Essential oils are the only thing that is directly recognised by your skin. I personally find essential oils based products very efficient. This one is based on neroli essential oil and moringa extract. You really don’t need a lot. I just dip my finger in the gel once and the amount is enough for my whole face.
I use this cream for now more than a month and my skin looks happy, no more breakouts, no more shiny T zone or at least way less than before.
I wanted to share this story with you because I really thought I was taking good care of my skin but the products I was using was just not appropriate…
What is your morning routine? Would love to know!!!!
Will share with you my night routine soon!
